description:
A site specific installation incorporating five Minolta Microfiche devices, downloaded low-res JPEG images printed on paper, several clothing hangers on a rack, a feather duster, and a stairwell in a training facility in suburban Chicago in November 2007.
Like pitiful, sad people in a rest home the machines sit hidden away rejected and ignored. The installation is a metaphor for self absorption, the audience has a gutteral feeling of pity and distaste, afraid of being noticed, touched or spoken to not wanting to be involved.
In discovering these sad old machines stored away from view, feelings of being forgotten and discarded lead to a desire to evoke expression on those viewscreens that resemble a kind of robot-face. But it is all a ruse, the artist again up to the old manipulation trick assigning emotion to inanimate objects in provocation of the crowd.
Dejected mug-shot faces are chosen for their unpleasant qualities, enlarged and pixilated to exacerbate that face and match the "personality" of each particular machine. Cave dwellers discovered.
